“Another Brick in my Castle” – Why I Turn Crazy Situations into Learning Experiences

People can be unpredictable, and its their unpredictability that can make certain situations scary.

It was 2am on a Saturday night, so my friend and I were out on another “street adventure” in Ottawa’s popular night life spot, “the market”. We came across a large group of country boys and unfortunately for us…they weren’t very friendly. Luckily, before things got out of hand we were able to avoid a violent situation.

Now, what astounded me wasn’t that there were a bunch of guys out “looking for trouble” – it’s the fact that once we were out of their focal point, their focus completely shifted to another person, but they still maintained the same level of aggression.

Where is this aggression coming from?

My conclusion is that these guys went out to find girls to bring home. They failed, so in order for them to prove their masculinity, they’re now looking for any reason to physically hurt someone in order for them to “win”.

It’s a low concious way of thinking and even though it’s difficult to relate to, I think it’s always worth trying to understand where people are coming from.

Whenever you experience a crazy situation, it’s easy to try to forget about it and call it a night. But sometimes, I find that situations like these can give you a lot of value if you just dig a bit deeper and try to really understand people’s intentions.

Unpredictability can be a scary thing, but once you start seeing patterns, the outcome is no longer “up in the air”. You can either learn to avoid it, or learn to control it.

  1. It is sad that this is how people function but it is so true I have witness it many times! This is a great way to look at it and I am glad you made it out ok!
